Spring is officially here, bringing warmer weather, longer days and a lot of activities and events to keep us busy in our own backyard. The highlight of retirement is not the free time, it’s the freedom to explore our passions and indulge a little on the things that inspire us most. From volunteer events to upscale fundraisers, there is much to explore and celebrate this spring throughout Needham.

Authors Alyson Richman and Lynda Cohen Loigman Speak at Temple Beth Shalom!

They will speak about their latest works, their sources of inspiration, and the writing process. Alyson will speak about her new novel, The Secret of Clouds, and Lynda will discuss her new book, The Wartime Sisters. Light refreshments will be served.

Understanding Our Differences Spring Benefit

An annual celebration and fundraiser for local nonprofit Understanding Our Differences, a group working to educate communities to value and accept people of all abilities through school-based, interactive disability awareness programs. The fundraiser will honor long-time Newton residents and Understanding Our Differences visionary leaders Marcia Herrmann and Mary Beth McIntyre. Visit with old and new friends, enjoy music and light dinner, support our Blindness unit update and UOD’s 21st century vision. Allergy friendly and accessible.

Growing Up Other in Suburbia: A Different Kind of Forum

Spring Seasonings: A Taste of our Towns

Sample culinary creations with beverage pairings from 40 of the region’s best establishments under one roof at the 25th annual Spring Seasonings: A Taste of Our Towns event. With over 500 expected in attendance, the event is always a sell-out so get your tickets early. Spring Seasonings is a not-to-be-missed celebration of the exploding restaurant scene in our communities and a fantastic opportunity to network, make connections, treat clients and reward employees.

Come celebrate Earth Day with the Needham Park and Recreation Commission and DPW Parks and Forestry! Join your neighbors as we clean up the town from the harsh winter. Supplies will be provided at the Rosemary Recreation Complex. We ask that you pre-register with the number of participants so that we can have enough supplies. A Feline Affair 2019: A Fundraiser to Support Homeless Cats

The 12th Annual Feline Affair is a wonderful event to support the Gifford Cat Shelter, the oldest no kill, free roam cat shelter in the U.S. Please join us on April 27th for drinks, dinner, live music, silent auction, pet photo contest, and more. In 2018, we found homes for 615 cats! With your support we can continue our mission of providing excellent shelter and care, while matching cats to loving homes.

Senior Golf League

Come score a hole in one with Needham Golf Club’s Senior Golf League! Each week you’ll be paired with a new competitor. Will you be the overall winner this season? All participants must be age 50 or older with previous experience scoring 72 or less on a 9-hole game. Can’t commit to the whole season? Sign-up to be a substitute!

Alice in Oz, A Pantomime Production

The Fringe Theatre in Needham presents its 10th Annual Panto Production, Alice in Oz. This modern take on a mashup of two classics will have you laughing, singing, and dancing in your seat. Join us as we follow Alice on her journey down the rabbit hole and into Oz where we meet Dorothy and the whole Ozian gang for a technicolor adventure that spans dimensions! Panto – or pantomime to give it its full name – is a quirky style of comedic theatre originally from the U.K.

What is Panto? Traditionally performed around the holiday season and New Year, Panto productions invite the audience—literally—to participate in the show with prompted shouting, community singing and joining the cast on stage. They are often based on popular fairy tales.

Guided Meditation with Live Guitarist Graham Peck

Join instructor Roseanne Russel for a relaxing guided meditation class accompanied by live acoustic music by guitarist Graham Peck in the Library at One Wingate Way. The instructor uses mindfulness along with other awareness and relaxation techniques to guide the mind of the group into a single-pointed center within. Relax and try something new while cleansing, clearing and elevating your conscious state of awareness.

Bacon & Bourbon Tasting with Taylor & Taylor Whiskey Co.

Delve into the details of how bourbon is made and enjoy samples of some of the best craft bourbons from the industry paired with superb bacon-infused tapas courtesy of our Executive Chef, Theresa Cinq-Mars. Nick Taylor of Taylor and Taylor Whiskey Co. will discuss the explosion of craft bourbon producers in the United States and how they have differentiated themselves from the mainstream brands.

Needham Classic Car Show

The Exchange Club of Needham is proud to announce the Second Annual Needham Classic Car Show to benefit community programs. The Needham Classic Car Show will be a family friendly event with free admission and will highlight antique cars, muscle cars, sports cars, and much more! 100 percent of the profits from the Needham Classic Car Show will go to help fund the Exchange Club’s community programs, including child safety and wellness programs, senior-friendly activities, youth programs and scholarships.

Wine Tasting at Sweet Basil: Zinfandel

Zinfandel– the All-American variety that is actually Italian (can you say Primitivo?) has a “split personality.” On one side, the grape was the basis for the wildly popular “White Zinfandel” craze of the 1980’s, and on the other side, Zinfandel produces full-throttle, spicy reds that are perfect beside the Summer BBQ. Seeing that Summer is approaching, we will be focusing only on the full-throttle, spicy reds, so get ready for a gutsy ride! Note: class registration is limited to 18 people.
