4 Easy Ways to Embrace Your Age at Any Age

We all have our own idea of what it means to “grow old,” but despite how we feel about it, it happens to all of us if we’re lucky. At some point, birthday milestones take on a new meaning—the privileges that come with turning 55 might seem to pale in comparison with everything that comes with turning 18, for example. But there’s a lot to look forward to in retirement and getting older in general (they don’t call them the “golden years” for nothin’).

You’ve probably heard about “aging well,” or “successful aging,” but what we sometimes forget to include when we talk about either of those is the idea of embracing aging. Rather than focusing on how “50 is the new 30,” and other similar sentiments, there are ways we can embrace what it means to grow older and love every second of it.

Explore Your Hobbies, New and Old

When we think of retirement, this is usually at the top of our wish list. While holding down a full-time job, raising kids and running a household, how many times have you said, “I wish there was more time in the day for me to do ___?” This is a great time to revisit those aspirations, bucket list items and passions. Now you can finally finish that remodeling project or really indulge in the things you love, whether it’s gardening, reading or building model ships. You’ve worked your entire life to accomplish the privileges of retirement—the opportunities to strengthen friendships, travel the world, finish a bucket list (or at least get started on one)—and now it’s time to finally enjoy it.

Learn to Love the Free Time

Many people look forward to retirement because it affords a new luxury of free time. It’s only when we reach retirement when we realize how hard it can be to structure a full day of activities. On one hand, you can take the time to fill your days with travel and plans with friends—but, learning to love the new free time to relax and unwind without distractions is a skill of its own. Practice spending time at home and embracing this balance.

Avoid Frustration; Indulge New Challenges

As we age, our bodies can change. Maybe you find yourself waking up with sore joints or look in the mirror one day and notice a wrinkle that just wasn’t there before. It’s easy to get frustrated by these side effects of aging, especially since they aren’t often portrayed as glamorous. But this can be a personally empowering time to really connect with these changes. Rather than spending your days trying to undo the subtle telltale signs of aging, start celebrating these hallmarks of experience and wisdom.

Let Go of What You Think It Means To “Be Old”

The stereotypes of yesteryear are long gone, and retirement looks different for everyone now. Done are the days of sitting complacently in a rocking chair—today, we can celebrate our age however we want and more of us are choosing to do just that. Embrace your age as both a number and so much more than that, but don’t let it fool you into thinking there’s any limit on what you can do and enjoy.

While this is all easier said than done, feeling great about aging is rewarding for many reasons. Enjoy feeling a better sense of self-worth and pride for all you’ve accomplished. Embracing your years is as much about embracing your life story and all you’ve given and received from those around you. And it’s a worthwhile endeavor that makes life in retirement all the better.
